Rethinking my sexing of Yellow Pearl cockatiel.?
Have what I thought were 2 male Cockatiels. I have a normal gray which is definitely male, and I have a yellow pearl, until most recently, I also thought was male. The gray had mounted the other day and I noticed and was thinking to myself that he was just frisky. But now i'm really unsure.
Ive had the Pearl since it was a couple weeks old. He/she has not yet lost the pearl color which Ive heard males will when they molt. He/she is well over a year old, probably more likely 1.5 years. Cheeks are orange but no where near what the male gray's are. Looks to be white/yellow spotting under wing also. Thanks for any help
If your bird is a lutino (yellow), it will not have the grey feathers which females commonly have mixed into the cheek patches. These grey feathers give normal grey females a dull or grey appearance. Since your bird is a lutino, the yellow and orange colors will be the same on either male or female.
You are right about pearling. Males lose most, if not all of their pearl pattern as they mature, but don't necessarily lose them right away. I have a pearl male who lost them gradually over several molts, but still has a few pearls. Hens won't change at all.
If you want to acurately determine the sex, all you need to do is look at the tailfeathers, with your bird facing you, and very bright light (sunlight) behind the bird.
All adult females (except some pieds), have markings on their tailfeathers called barring. Tail bars are horizontal stripes that go across the feathers. In some mutations, like lutinos, they are very faint, and can be hard to see. Most hens, but not all, also have wing spots - a row of pea-sized spots along the edge of each flight feather.
