50,000,000,000 atoms in a drop of water seems like a lot, but it isn't. By counting the water molecules in 18 grams of water (about 2/3 of an ounce) we come up with 602,300,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules. To find the percentage of gold to seawater, divide these numbers: 5*10^10/6.023*10^23=0.00000000000083%, a very small part. Even if that drop weighed 2 grams it would be 0.0000000000083%, which is still very small.
The mineral used by corals is calcite. I am not sure about aleae. Diatoms use silica to make their shell. The basic process is to precipitate minerals out of sea water and to use it to build the shell, I don't know the details. I am not sure of any benefits to the environment in this process.
