How much would a 1881 silver dollar be worth today?
I was in a woman's shelter many years ago and one of the workers for the evening shift took us upstairs and offer us clothing and other donated things sent for the women living there. I did not need any clothing so I opted for the sheets and towels and such. when I looked inside one of the bags ,I found a very old choker necklace with a big cameo and three strand pearls, lemon oil in it's original box, and a black box with an 1881 coin in it. I do not want to be taken advantage of so
I would appreciate any answers in this matter.
First check to see if it has a mint mark. If there is one it is on the eagle side near the bottom under the wreath. The only on that is scarce is the one with the CC mint mark (Carson City) values on that start at around $300.00. The others in circulated grades are worth around $10-$12 depending on the value of silver at the time of sale. If the coin has no wear, that is hair above the ear visible all feathers on the eagle's breast and wing tips there & sharp then the coin could have more value. Best bet try more than one dealer.
